Modi’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” a Hollow Slogan: Kolkata Law College Gang Rape Case Exposes State Failure

02 July, 2025 10:56

Kolkata—The Modi government’s much-touted campaign “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) stands exposed as a hollow slogan, with the recent gang rape of a 24-year-old student at Kolkata Law College serving as a chilling example of administrative and institutional failure.

According to an NDTV report, the incident occurred on the night of June 25 at South Kolkata Law College, where the victim was forcibly confined to a guard room and gang-raped. The accused include two senior students and a former student of the college.

The main accused, Manojeet Mishra, a former student and teacher, remains at large reportedly due to strong political connections. He is said to be associated with the Trinamool Congress Student Organization, according to NDTV.

The victim revealed that the accused had been blackmailing her, and during the assault, the guards remained silent spectators. She identified the attackers using the initials J, M, and P. CCTV footage and the medical report corroborated her statement, NDTV reported.

The Kolkata Law College gang rape case came to light not through college authorities or police, but via media reports, exposing the administration’s ignorance and the security system’s complete failure. The vice-principal’s gross negligence is also being highlighted, with reports stating he abandoned his responsibility, thereby endangering the victim’s life.

NDTV further reported that the internal security system of India’s educational institutions is in crisis, and the vice-principal’s actions destroyed the college’s safety mechanism.

India, critics say, is becoming a prison for women under the current regime. With over 30,000 rape cases reported annually, and approximately 43 women sexually assaulted every hour, the country faces a growing crisis.

A recently released US travel advisory has also implicitly acknowledged the Modi government’s failure to protect women, reinforcing global concern over the deteriorating safety of women in India.
