Police Reveal Cause of Diogo Jota’s Fatal Car Crash in Spain

Liverpool Star Diogo Jota Dies in Car Accident, Aged 28
Liverpool football star Diogo Jota died in a tragic car accident early Thursday morning on the A-52 motorway in northwest Spain. His brother Andre Silva, who was with him in the car, also lost his life.
According to Spanish police reports and local news outlet Efe, the Lamborghini Jota and his brother were traveling in had a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle. This caused the car to spin off the road and catch fire. The crash happened around 12:40 a.m., approximately 70 miles west of Valladolid.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire, which had spread to nearby vegetation. Emergency medical services and the Civil Guard attended the scene but could only confirm the deaths of both occupants.
Diogo Jota, aged 28, had recently married Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children. He often spoke of feeling like the luckiest man alive to have her as his wife.
Tributes poured in from across the football community after the news broke. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher expressed his sadness on social media, sending condolences to Jota’s wife and children. Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand called the news “absolutely heartbreaking,” while former teammate Ruben Neves shared a touching message: “They say we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you!”
The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement mourning the deaths of Jota and Silva, calling it an “irreparable loss for Portuguese football.” They praised Diogo Jota as an extraordinary person, known for his infectious joy and respect among peers.
Diogo Jota had a stellar career, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool since joining in 2020 for £45 million. He won the Premier League title with Liverpool last season, along with the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022. On the international stage, he earned 49 caps for Portugal, scoring 14 goals.
His brother Andre Silva, 26, was also a professional footballer, playing for Liga Portugal 2 club Penafiel at the time of his death.
