In a major step toward improving digital security and financial transparency, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has introduced new guidelines for cash transactions via mobile wallets like JazzCash and easypaisa.
Biometric Required for Cash Deposits & Withdrawals
Under the new policy, customers must use biometric verification when depositing or withdrawing cash at authorized retail outlets. “Over-the-counter transactions made without biometric verification will be rejected.” This move aims to curb digital fraud and ensure that every cash transaction is both secure and traceable.
Online Wallet Services Not Affected
SBP clarified that this rule only applies to physical cash transactions at retailer locations. “The ban will not apply to the use of online wallets, fund transfers, and other digital facilities of the app.” Customer accounts and balances remain fully secure, and users can continue using mobile wallets for digital services without any issues.
Pakistan’s Digital Growth Continues
The country’s digital financial system is rapidly evolving. Between October and December 2024, retail digital transactions in Pakistan grew by 12% year-on-year, reflecting increasing trust and accessibility of mobile banking and e-wallet platforms.
This new regulation is part of SBP’s broader efforts to build a safer and more transparent digital economy in Pakistan.
