Diogo Jota’s Autopsy to Take Days as Family Gets Psychological Support

July 3, 2025 – The football world is in deep shock following the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday morning, June 30. He was only 28 years old. His brother, Andre Silva, also died in the accident.

The crash happened on the A-52 motorway in Zamora, Spain. Early police reports say the car suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The car then crashed off the road and caught fire. Sadly, both Jota and his brother were declared dead at the scene.

Autopsy May Take Several Days

According to Jornal de Noticias, a Portuguese news outlet, the autopsies may take several days to complete. The bodies are being held at the Zamora Institute of Forensic Medicine, where DNA tests and other examinations are being done to confirm their identities.

Spanish official Angel Blanco, the deputy government delegate in Zamora, said: “The bodies will be sent to the National Institute of Toxicology in Madrid. The results may take several days.”

Officials say that the fire damage made it hard to identify the bodies right away.

Family Receives Support

Jota’s family has now arrived in Zamora. They are receiving help from psychological support teams sent by the Regional Government of Castilla y León. Support started early in the morning at 9:30am local time.

Police Continue Investigation

The Spanish Civil Guard is still investigating the cause of the crash. A spokesperson confirmed: “We believe the car suffered a tyre blowout. The final police report is still being prepared. It will take about four or five days to complete.”

The investigation shows that no other car was involved, and no one else was hurt.

It’s been reported that Jota was traveling to catch a ferry to the UK, as he had recently undergone lung surgery and was advised not to fly.
