Jannik Sinner will play against Pedro Martinez in the third round of Wimbledon. This match marks an important moment for the Italian player, who returned to the tennis court after serving a three-month doping ban earlier this year.
Sinner, currently ranked world No. 1, tested positive twice for clostebol, a banned steroid. The positive tests happened in March 2024 but the suspension started later, from February 9 to May 4, 2025. The ban was agreed after a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Clostebol is a steroid that can help build muscle mass. Sinner explained that he did not cheat intentionally. He said his physiotherapist accidentally caused contamination. The physiotherapist had sprayed a cream containing clostebol on a cut on Sinner’s finger. WADA accepted this explanation but said Sinner was still responsible for his team’s carelessness.
Because of this, Sinner was suspended and lost some prize money and ranking points from the Indian Wells tournament. However, he was allowed to keep playing in big events like the Australian Open in January 2025, where he won his third Grand Slam title, before the ban started.
The suspension and its timing caused some controversy in the tennis world. Many felt Sinner got special treatment because he is a top player with access to skilled lawyers. Former British player Tim Henman said the case left a “sour taste” and felt too convenient. He explained that doping rules should be clear and strict. Negotiations and settlements in doping cases can confuse fans and players.
After returning from his ban, Sinner played well at the Italian Open and French Open in 2025. He finished as runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at both tournaments.
Now, Sinner aims to continue his good form at Wimbledon and try to win the prestigious title.
