Who Is Devyn Smith? 23-Year-Old Lone Survivor in Texas Flood That Killed Most of Her Family

A devastating flash flood in Central Texas has claimed at least 52 lives, including 15 children — but amid the heartbreak, Devyn Smith, a 23-year-old woman from Midland, Texas, has emerged as the sole survivor from her family of six after they were swept away by the Guadalupe River near Ingram.

What Happened?

On a stormy night in Kerr County, the HTR Campgrounds became ground zero for the deadly flooding. Torrential rains caused the Guadalupe River to rise rapidly to 23.4 feet, engulfing vehicles, campsites, and everything in its path. Among those affected was Devyn Smith’s family, who had traveled there for a short vacation.

Smith’s father, Joel Ramos, and her uncle and aunt, Cody and Michelle Crossland, have been confirmed dead. Her mother, Tasha Ramos, and sister, Kendall Ramos, remain missing and are feared dead.

Who Is Devyn Smith?

Devyn Smith, originally from Midland, was visiting the holiday camp when the flood hit. According to the Houston Chronicle, she was in one truck with her aunt and uncle while the rest of her family slept in another. As the waters surged, both groups attempted to escape by climbing through their sunroofs.

But the current was too powerful.

“The Current Was Too Strong”

Smith’s cousin, Xavier Ramirez, told NBC News that his uncle tried to hold everyone together, but “the current was too strong.” Their crushed truck was later found near Ingram with Michelle’s purse still inside.

“We’re still praying for another miracle,” Ramirez said. “But this is likely a recovery, not a rescue.”

How Devyn Smith Survived

Despite being swept 15 to 20 miles downstream, Devyn managed to cling to a tree near Center Point. A local man, Carl Jetter, heard her screams and quickly alerted authorities. She was rescued alive, though bruised and shaken.

Her survival is being called nothing short of a miracle.
