Trump begins major purge of State Department after court approval

US State Department began a major round of layoffs. Over 1,350 employees have been dismissed in the first phase of a massive restructuring plan ordered by President Donald Trump’s administration. This move is part of the government’s new direction under the “America First” strategy.
An internal memo revealed that 1,107 civil service officers and 246 foreign service staff based in the United States were terminated. The plan aims to reduce nearly 3,000 jobs, affecting about 17% of the department’s total domestic workforce.
This decision has caused serious backlash from many lawmakers and foreign policy experts. Critics say the job cuts could damage America’s global presence, especially during a time of increasing global tensions.
Senator Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, spoke out against the move.
“This is dangerous. While China grows stronger, Russia continues its war, and the Middle East remains unstable, we are weakening our diplomacy.”
Over 130 retired diplomats and ambassadors signed an open letter. They warned that the staff cuts will hurt America’s ability to manage international issues, monitor conflicts, and promote peace.
President Trump believes the State Department is full of unnecessary bureaucracy. In February 2025, he ordered Secretary of State Marco Rubio to restructure the foreign service. The goal was to ensure only loyal employees carry out White House policies.
In April, Rubio said the department must modernize. He proposed shifting power to embassies and removing programs that do not directly serve US interests.
Among the targeted departments are those focusing on civilian security, human rights, and war crimes investigations.
Originally, a federal court had blocked the restructuring. However, the US Supreme Court recently lifted the injunction, allowing the government to proceed. Since then, the Office of Personnel Management and other federal bodies have been working to ensure the layoffs follow all legal rules.
While the administration says the move will make the State Department “leaner and stronger,” many believe it could weaken US leadership abroad. As other global powers grow, this internal shake-up may leave America less prepared for international challenges.
