Former PM Mahathir Mohamad Discharged from Hospital at Age 100

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, 100, has been discharged from the hospital.

Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the hospital this morning after falling ill. He had cut his 100th birthday cake last Thursday.

According to local media, former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad attended the 99th birthday celebration of his wife, Hasma Mohamed Ali, today, where he drove himself to the event. He also cycled for an hour before the event.

After attending a birthday party, Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the hospital complaining of fatigue, where he was medically examined, and after a few hours of rest, doctors allowed him to go home.

Mahathir Mohamad has been suffering from heart disease and has also undergone bypass surgery.

It should be noted that Mahathir Mohamad has been the Prime Minister of Malaysia for more than 23 years.

He first became prime minister in 1981, after which he left power in 2003 and completely separated from politics.

Later in 2018, he returned to the prime ministership after the opposition coalition’s historic victory, but his government ended in less than two years due to internal differences. He himself remained a member of parliament until 2022.

Mahathir Mohamad married his wife, Hasma Mohamed Ali, in 1956.

In an interview last year, he said that he regretted leaving office in 2003 because at that time I was not even 80 years old. When I was about to turn 80, I told myself that 80 years is a sign of very old age.

I thought I wouldn’t be able to work very well now, but after retiring I discovered that I was capable of working.

Mahathir Mohamad added that “experience comes with age, and society should try to retain older workers. If you retain older people in the workforce and allow them to continue working instead of retiring early, you can benefit from their experience.”
