The Sindh government has extended the deadline for installing Ajrak-themed number plates to August 14. During this period, police have been instructed not to fine vehicles that have yet to switch to the new design.
Provincial Minister for Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Mukesh Kumar Chawla announced this decision in Karachi on Monday.
“Ajrak represents Sindh’s cultural identity and it will remain part of the new number plates,” Chawla stated. He acknowledged some concerns raised about the design but emphasized that it also acts as a security feature.
He clarified that no fines will be imposed on vehicles that have not yet installed the official Ajrak-themed plates until the extended deadline. However, other traffic violations—such as riding without a helmet or driving without valid documents—will continue to be penalized.
The Ajrak number plates, which are part of the Safe City project, are being introduced for all vehicles throughout the province. Despite criticism over their design and legality, the government maintains that the initiative promotes cultural identity and improves security.
Chawla reiterated that the new plates are mandatory and that the deadline extension is intended to give citizens additional time to comply.
