The world has lost a music legend. Connie Francis, the beloved American singer known for her 1960s hits like Pretty Little Baby, has passed away at the age of 87.
Her death was confirmed by close friend Ron Roberts in an emotional Facebook post late Wednesday night. He wrote, “It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend Connie Francis last night.”
Pretty Little Baby, released in 1962, became unexpectedly popular again on TikTok earlier this year. Young fans used the song in viral lip-sync and dance videos. The sudden attention brought the singer back into the spotlight.
Francis had expressed her joy, saying she was “thrilled and overwhelmed” that a 63-year-old song could touch the hearts of millions once more. In May, the song climbed into the Top 5 on both US and UK Spotify charts. On Spotify alone, it gathered over 74.8 million streams.
She admitted in a recent interview that she didn’t even remember the song at first. “I had to listen to it to recall it,” she laughed.
In early July, Francis was admitted to the ICU due to intense pelvic pain. She was later seen using a wheelchair and had to cancel a planned performance on July 4. Despite her health struggles, she posted a heartfelt Independence Day message to fans, thanking them for their prayers and support. “Thank you so much everybody, thank you TikTok,” she wrote.
As news of her death spread, tributes poured in online. Fans called her an “amazingly talented and lovely lady.” One wrote, “Rest in peace Connie, you are one of my favorites. Sing up a storm in heaven, girl.”
Francis rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s. She gave the world hits like Stupid Cupid, Lipstick on Your Collar, Where the Boys Are, and Who’s Sorry Now. The last track reached number one in the UK in 1958 and stayed there for six weeks. It also made it to number four on the US Billboard charts.
In later years, Francis opened up about her personal challenges. In a 2011 interview, she spoke about being misdiagnosed with several mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder and ADHD. Her honesty inspired many.
Her final public appearances included film festival events and interviews celebrating her legacy.
