GILGIT-BALTISTAN – An avalanche struck near Camp One of K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, on Friday afternoon, injuring one foreign climber and killing a local climber.

According to Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the avalanche occurred around 2:30 PM, about 500 meters above the base camp. Four climbers were caught in the avalanche.

One foreign climber received minor injuries, while two others managed to escape and safely returned to base camp. Sadly, Iftikhar Hussain, a local climber from Sadpara village in Skardu, was buried under the snow. He was later recovered but had already passed away.

The climbing company officially requested the Alpine Club to help transport Iftikhar Hussain’s body by helicopter. The Pakistan Army approved the request on humanitarian grounds, and Army Aviation airlifted the body from K2 base camp to Skardu.

Alpine Club President Major General Irfan Arshad expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered full support to Iftikhar Hussain’s family during this difficult time.
