Islamabad to Launch Electric Tram Bus Service
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce an electric tram bus service in Islamabad to enhance public transport for citizens.
CDA Meeting and Project Planning
The decision was taken during a meeting at CDA headquarters chaired by Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa. During the meeting, it was agreed to initiate electric tram buses within the city.
Bus Stop Development Underway
Work has already begun on upgrading 140 bus stops across Islamabad, with plans to construct over 200 new stops in total to support the upcoming transport system.
Focus on Modern Transport
Chairman Randhawa visited Park Enclave Phases One, Two, and Three, and emphasized, “Providing modern and best transport facilities to Islamabad is the top priority.” He instructed officials to complete the tram system’s feasibility study promptly and explore partnerships with the private sector. He also called for defined goals and timelines to implement the project efficiently.
Punjab’s Upcoming E-Taxi Scheme
Meanwhile, Punjab’s government is preparing to launch an electric taxi scheme in August. The transport department has finalized all preparations, including a dedicated online application portal developed with the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
Women-Centered Transport Options
The scheme includes a special allocation of 30 electric taxis for women to support their inclusion in public transport. A total of 1,100 e-taxis will be distributed to fleet operators, individual drivers, and ride-hailing services.
Financial Support for Buyers
Under this pilot project, the Punjab government will cover the registration fees, token tax, and interest. Nine companies have been shortlisted to supply the vehicles, and selected vendors will also provide service centers and charging stations.
