Struggle for Freedom in Occupied Kashmir Exposes Indian State’s Desperation

The Modi government’s recent actions in Occupied Kashmir have revealed the true nature of its so-called democracy, as elected representatives, including the Chief Minister, were placed under house arrest.

According to the Indian newspaper The Wire, Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor detained these officials on July 13.

These measures follow the government’s earlier revocation of Article 370 and the abolition of the official holiday marking Martyrs’ Day in the region, The Wire reports. The 1931 incident, which saw 22 Kashmiri people killed by the Dogra rulers, represents the political and constitutional identity of the Kashmiri people, according to The Wire. However, the BJP opposition leader has labeled those victims “traitors.”

Following the abrogation of Article 370, the BJP is actively working to integrate Jammu and Kashmir under the laws that govern the rest of India. The Wire highlights that the Lieutenant Governor’s constitutionally questionable actions raise concerns not only for Jammu and Kashmir but also for other states.

The BJP’s approach, according to The Wire, attempts to impose a unified nationalist historical narrative on India’s federal units. The party’s labeling of the 1931 martyrs as “traitors” is an effort to suppress the Kashmiri freedom struggle. Moreover, banning Kashmiri memorial days signals the Modi government’s mental defeat.

Observers note that the Modi government’s forceful governance of Occupied Kashmir reflects an undemocratic and authoritarian mindset. Far from strengthening control, these aggressive actions have instead destabilized the region.

The insult to Kashmiri martyrs is a part of a broader conspiracy under the Hindutva ideology aimed at suppressing Muslim identity in the region.
