Punjab set to start interest-free e-taxi scheme in August – Here’s how to apply

The Punjab government is set to launch its Electric Taxi (E-Taxi) Scheme in August 2025, aiming to promote eco-friendly transport and offer new income opportunities. Applications will open soon through a new online platform being developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).

According to Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, the scheme will provide electric taxis on easy, interest-free installments. The government will cover costs such as markup, token tax, and registration fees, making it easier for drivers and small business owners to take part.

In the first phase, 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed. Out of these, 1,000 will go to fleet owners, who must buy at least 10 vehicles each. The remaining 100 taxis will be given to individual drivers, including a special quota of 30 taxis for women, encouraging their participation in the transport sector.

Nine electric vehicle suppliers have been shortlisted to supply the vehicles and help build charging stations, service centers, and spare parts shops across Punjab.

Minister Khan confirmed that preparations for the project are nearly complete, and the formal launch will happen within the next two weeks. The initiative not only promotes cleaner transport but also helps generate income for individuals and ride-hailing businesses.

Interested individuals will be able to apply online in August through a digital platform. The full application process will be announced soon.
