China-based firms want licenses to export donkey meat from Pakistan

29 July, 2025 18:22

China is planning to import donkey meat and bones from Pakistan, and two Chinese companies have applied for licenses to set up slaughterhouses for this purpose.

The Ministry of National Food Security is currently reviewing the applications, and exports will only begin once all legal and safety checks are complete.

The demand from China is linked to the use of donkey meat for food and donkey hides for making e-jiao, a traditional Chinese medicine believed to help with blood circulation, skin health, and overall immunity.

Officials have confirmed that the donkey meat will be strictly for export and not for sale or use within Pakistan. This move is expected to bring in foreign exchange, as all products will be shipped from Gwadar Port in Balochistan.

As of June 2025, Pakistan’s donkey population has grown to 6.047 million, an increase of over 109,000 in just one year.

With China’s interest, local donkey prices have also gone up, signaling the potential for a new export market while also raising concerns about regulation and animal welfare.
