For over two decades, the Tuilagi family has dominated Samoan rugby, with Freddie, Henry, Alesana, Anitelea, and Sanele Vavae all representing Samoa. Manu Tuilagi took a different route, becoming a star for England. Now, a new name is stepping onto the international stage—Posolo Tuilagi.
First France Start for Posolo
Teenager Posolo Tuilagi is set to make his first start for France in the Six Nations against Italy in Lille. Despite being young enough to still play for France’s U20s, the powerful lock has already made waves in the Top 14 with Perpignan, the same club where his father, Henry, ended his career.
A Giant on the Rise
Born in Samoa, Posolo moved to France at age three. He made his professional debut in 2022 and quickly drew attention due to his immense size—nearly 150kg—and skillful play. He was instrumental in France’s U20 World Championship win, even scoring twice against New Zealand.
A Surprise Opportunity
Although he wasn’t initially selected for the Six Nations, injuries to Emmanuel Meafou and illness sidelining Romain Taofifenua gave Posolo a chance. “Posolo is ready,” said scrum coach William Servat. “He fitted in well and took part in all phase-play training.”
Position Debates and Potential
There has been talk about a position switch due to Posolo’s build, which is unique for a lock. While some suggest a future at prop or number eight, coach Fabien Galthie revealed that Posolo prefers to stay in his current role.
Team Excitement and Praise
His teammates are thrilled about his debut. “It’s a rare profile,” said flanker François Cros. “There aren’t a lot of players like him… he’s a great weapon for us.” Yoram Moefana humorously described him as a “lorry,” highlighting his physical presence on the field.
A Historic Eighth Tuilagi
Posolo becomes the eighth Tuilagi to play international rugby. His father, Henry, played ten times for Samoa, and uncle Manu may face him in the Six Nations finale. Their sibling Julie identifies as fa’afafine, a traditional third gender in Samoan culture.
