Who is Scott Schwartz? Artistic Visionary Behind Global Theatre Success

Scott Schwartz currently serves as the Artistic Director of Bay Street Theater, a position that underscores his commitment to innovation in the performing arts. A globally celebrated artist, Schwartz’s directorial work has spanned Broadway, off-Broadway, and stages across the U.S., the UK, Europe, and Asia.

Broadway & Off-Broadway Successes

Schwartz directed the acclaimed Broadway productions of Golda’s Balcony and Jane Eyre (co-directed with John Caird). His off-Broadway highlights include Bat Boy: The Musical — winner of the Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle Awards — and tick, tick…BOOM!, which also earned an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Director of a Musical.

Other notable productions include Murder for Two, Kafka’s The Castle (Outer Critics Circle nomination), The Foreigner starring Matthew Broderick, Rooms: A Rock Romance, Gigantic, and No Way to Treat a Lady.

International Impact

Schwartz directed the U.S. premiere of Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame at La Jolla Playhouse and Paper Mill Playhouse, with later productions in Japan, Germany, and Austria. In London’s West End, he helmed The Prince of Egypt at the Dominion Theatre, tick, tick…BOOM! at the Menier Chocolate Factory, and Golda’s Balcony at the Shaw Theatre.

Recent Works Across the Globe

More recently, Schwartz directed The Ghost and the Lady in Tokyo, Double Helix at Bay Street Theater, and Séance on a Wet Afternoon at New York City Opera. He also worked on Big Fish in Seoul and the world premiere of The Prince of Egypt at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley and Fredericia Teater in Denmark.

Collaboration with Renowned U.S. Theaters

Throughout his career, Schwartz has directed productions at major American venues including Berkshire Theatre Festival, Center Theatre Group, Dallas Theatre Center, Denver Center, 5th Avenue Theater, Geffen Playhouse, Goodspeed Opera House, La Jolla Playhouse, Old Globe, Paper Mill Playhouse, Pasadena Playhouse, and Signature Theatre.
