Lahore Launches World’s First Smart Anti-Smog Gun System to Battle Toxic Air

04 August, 2025 19:56

Would you like variations geared toward a younger audience, social media headlines, or something more formal or technical?Lahore has taken a big step in its fight against dangerous smog by introducing the world’s first tested dust suspension system. This system includes 15 advanced “Anti-Smog Guns” that arrived earlier this week and are currently being assembled. These guns are expected to help reduce air pollution in the city, especially during the harsh winter smog season when air quality becomes extremely poor.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif shared the news on social media, saying, “Alhamdulilah the first ever world-tested dust suspension system comprising of 15 Anti Smog Guns has arrived in Lahore and is being assembled.” These smog guns work by releasing a very fine mist of water into the air. The mist captures harmful dust and pollution particles like PM2.5 and PM10, making them heavier so they fall to the ground. This process helps clean the air we breathe, especially in busy or industrial areas where pollution is at its worst.

Unlike older versions of water-spraying machines, these guns are much smarter. They are linked to Punjab’s live air quality monitoring system, satellite images, and even drones. The system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to decide when and where to activate the guns. It can also track pollution from specific sources like brick kilns, which are now being tagged with QR codes for easy monitoring. The Environmental Protection Force will operate and manage these guns, making them a mobile tool for controlling pollution on the ground.

The guns can spray water up to a distance of 100 meters and cover a wide area. Each one uses high-pressure nozzles to break water into tiny droplets—between 50 to 100 microns in size. These droplets bind to pollutants in the air, including dust, smoke, and chemical particles, and push them to the ground. The machines are usually mounted on vehicles, so they can move around the city to target problem areas.

While experts and citizens are hopeful, they also say this is not a permanent solution. Air quality levels in Lahore have been dangerously high in the past, with some readings showing an Air Quality Index (AQI) over 1,100. Health experts warn that fog cannons can only provide temporary relief. Long-term solutions are still needed, like reducing emissions from vehicles and factories, improving public transport, and controlling the operation of brick kilns.

The Punjab government is calling this system a major step forward in environmental management. CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the project combines technology, smart planning, and citizen involvement. She said, “With resolve, technology, innovation, and citizens’ participation, we will together, Insha’Allah, win the fight against smog.” Officials also mentioned that the system is being funded through a public–private partnership, so it won’t create extra costs for regular citizens.

The 15 Anti-Smog Guns will soon be deployed in different parts of Lahore. These include industrial areas, crowded residential zones, and roads with heavy traffic. If the system proves to be effective, the government plans to expand the project across Punjab before the peak smog season arrives. This initiative could set an example for other cities struggling with air pollution, offering both short-term relief and a step toward cleaner, healthier air.
