Who is Michael Nyaga Muchiri? The New Voice of the National Police Service
Michael Nyaga Muchiri has taken over as the official spokesperson for the National Police Service (NPS). His appointment was made on January 16, 2025, by Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja. This move was part of a major reshuffle within the service.
Who is Michael Nyaga Muchiri?
Muchiri steps into the role with over 34 years of police service. He joined the Kenya Police on September 8, 1990, as a Constable. Through discipline and commitment, he rose steadily in rank.
In 1999, he was promoted to Inspector and posted to the Kenya Airports Police Unit at Wilson Airport, Nairobi. There, he served as the Deputy Officer Commanding Station. His work in this role gave him his first real taste of leadership.
By 2007, Muchiri had moved up to Superintendent of Police. This senior role put him in charge of key operational planning and investigations. He was also tasked with commanding police stations or units in his areas of assignment.
After his promotion, he was posted to the Kenya Police College in Kiganjo as an instructor. He trained recruits in investigations and leadership skills. Many of his trainees are now serving officers in different parts of the country.
In 2014, Muchiri was appointed Deputy County Commander in Marsabit. This is one of Kenya’s largest and most remote counties. The job was challenging because of the vast land area and sparse population. He had to manage security operations over long distances and across difficult terrain.
Later, he served as the County Police Commander for Kiambu. This role involved managing security in a busy and densely populated county. Kiambu faces both urban and peri-urban policing challenges, and Muchiri led teams handling everything from traffic control to serious crime.
Now, as NPS Spokesperson, his main duty is to manage the public and media communication for the police service. He replaces Dr. Resila Onyango, who was reassigned to the Diplomatic Police Unit.
Aside from his police work, Muchiri is also a columnist for the Daily Nation. He writes about public safety, police work, and security communication. Through his writing, he aims to build public trust and understanding.
In his personal life, Muchiri enjoys chess and is a loyal supporter of Liverpool Football Club.
From his first day as a Constable to becoming the national voice of the police, Michael Nyaga Muchiri’s journey is a story of dedication, leadership, and service.
