Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi released after arrest in election rigging protest
Indian opposition leaders and Congress party figures Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi have been released after being taken into custody. They were marching towards the Election Commission’s office to protest what they call bias in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Why the Protest Happened
The opposition leaders claim that the Election Commission is not neutral and is helping the government. Police said they stepped in to stop any “breakdown of law and order” after some protesters tried to jump over barricades.
What Rahul and Priyanka Said
While being taken away, Rahul Gandhi told reporters, “This fight is not political—it’s to save the Constitution. We want a clean and fair voter list.”
Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of being afraid of criticism, saying, “They are scared. The government is cowardly.”
Scenes from the Protest
Videos showed a big crowd outside Parliament, waving placards, chanting slogans, and trying to push past barricades. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav was even seen climbing over two barricades before being detained.
Police took the detained leaders to a nearby station. Opposition parties have promised to continue their campaign for fair elections and more transparency in the voting process.
