SSGC Cancels Independence Day Gas Shutdown in Karachi

The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has announced that gas supply in Karachi will remain uninterrupted on Independence Day, reversing its earlier plan for a day-long suspension in several areas.

Earlier Shutdown Plan

On Tuesday, SSGC had informed residents of District West that gas would be cut off from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on August 14. The planned load shedding was to affect many neighborhoods, including:

• Haroonabad SITE Area

• Sher Shah

• SITE

• Jehanabad

• Mianwali Colony

• Lashari Mohalla

• Metroville

• Bawani Chali

• Pathan Colony

• Old Golimar

• Rexer Colony

• Hasan Oliya

• Muslimabad

Industrial zones such as Gulbai, Mauripur, Tikri Village, Muslim Colony, and parts of the SITE Industrial Area were also on the list.

The shutdown was originally scheduled to allow the relocation of a gas pipeline at the request of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), which is working on a major water pipeline restoration project.

Why the Shutdown Was Canceled

According to SSGC, the KWSB restoration program has been temporarily postponed. As a result, there is no need to disrupt gas supply on Independence Day.

In its official statement, SSGC confirmed: “The notice issued earlier regarding the gas suspension should now be considered void. Gas will be supplied as usual.”

Relief for Residents and Businesses

The announcement has brought relief to thousands of households and commercial units that had been preparing for a day without gas.

Industries in the SITE area, which rely heavily on gas for production, will now avoid possible losses and disruptions. Restaurants, bakeries, and other small businesses dependent on gas can also operate without worry.

The decision means Karachi residents can enjoy Independence Day celebrations without the inconvenience of a major utility outage.
