PAF Launches Relief Operation in Gilgit-Baltistan After Deadly Floods
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has launched a major relief operation in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) after weeks of flash floods devastated the region, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Wednesday.
A C-130 aircraft transported seven tons of dry rations, food, and medicines to the affected areas. The consignment will be distributed with the support of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
Despite blocked roads, the relief goods were successfully delivered, while 75 stranded people were evacuated to safe locations. The ISPR said relief efforts will continue until full support reaches the flood-hit communities.
Situation in Gilgit-Baltistan
Thousands of residents in GB are still struggling without drinking water, electricity, and road connectivity. Volunteers have started restoring water channels and roads, but several routes remain blocked.
Naltar Highway and Ghizer-Shandur Road are still closed.
Baltistan Highway in Skardu’s Roundu Valley was reopened after several days.
According to GB government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq, Ghizer district is the worst-hit. He said the floods, among the worst in GB’s history, have killed 39 people (including tourists) since July and caused damages worth an estimated Rs30 billion.
Losses and Damages
24 people injured so far.
35 bridges washed away.
350 houses destroyed, 600 partially damaged.
12 mosques and Jamaat Khanas damaged.
6 school buildings affected.
