Who is Senne Lammens? Manchester United Agree Deal for Belgian Goalkeeper Seen as Courtois’ Successor

01 September, 2025 16:46

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens for €21 million plus add-ons. The 23-year-old Belgian is considered one of the brightest young keepers in Europe and has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of Thibaut Courtois with the national team.

United’s goalkeeping problems this season pushed the club into the market. Altay Bayindir made a costly mistake in the opening game against Arsenal, while André Onana has struggled for form across two seasons. New manager Ruben Amorim is said to be unconvinced by Onana, which opened the door for a new signing.

Lammens’ Career So Far

Lammens came through the youth ranks at Club Brugge but made only four senior appearances. His progress was blocked by Simon Mignolet, which forced him to leave in 2023. He joined Royal Antwerp on a free transfer, starting as backup to Jean Butez before becoming the first-choice keeper last season.

Belgian football expert Bart Tamsyn explained:
“Lammens was seen as one of Belgium’s best young goalkeepers. He showed incredible quality at Antwerp, making more saves than anyone else in the Jupiler Pro League last season. He is calm under pressure, confident with both feet, and always looks for the smart pass.”

Strengths and Weaknesses

Lammens is known for his strong mentality, quick reflexes, and ability to play from the back. His distribution with either foot is a major strength, something United’s system values highly.

However, he still lacks experience at the very top level. Tamsyn noted that Lammens makes “small mistakes almost every game,” often due to risky passes or misjudged clearances. But given his age, there is room for growth, and his potential remains huge.

Transfer Value and Records

Lammens’ current market value is €9 million, but Antwerp had set their price at €20 million. The deal with United will make him Antwerp’s most expensive sale, surpassing Arthur Vermeeren’s move to Atletico Madrid in 2024.

For Manchester United, this transfer signals a long-term plan. The Belgian is seen as a possible successor to Courtois at international level and could eventually become United’s No.1.
