Chinese Company Launches ‘Unhappy Leave’ Policy: ‘IF You’Re Not Happy, Don’t Come To Work

03 September, 2025 23:46

HENAN: In a rare move prioritizing employee well-being, Yu Donglai, founder of China’s Pang Dong Lai retail chain, has introduced a new policy allowing staff to take up to 10 days of “unhappy leave” each year.

Under the policy, employees can take time off whenever they feel down, with no need for managerial approval. “If you’re not happy, do not come to work,” Yu emphasized, highlighting his company’s commitment to work-life balance.

Pang Dong Lai, based in Henan province, employs about 7,000 people and is known for its strong focus on customer service and employee satisfaction. Staff already enjoy a seven-hour workday, weekends off, 30–40 days of annual leave, and five days off during the Lunar New Year.

Yu’s approach directly challenges China’s notorious “996” work culture—working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week—which he has publicly condemned as unethical and harmful.

The introduction of “unhappy leave” quickly went viral on Chinese social media platform Weibo, with many users praising the initiative. One user wrote: “Such a good boss. This culture should be promoted nationwide.” Another added: “I feel like I would gain happiness and respect there.”

This bold step not only sets Pang Dong Lai apart in China’s retail sector but also sparks a wider debate on workplace culture and mental health.
