NDMA Issues Warning as Heavy Rain Expected Across Pakistan

06 September, 2025 16:44

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has predicted three days of heavy rainfall across the country, with the tenth spell of the monsoon system entering today.

According to the weather forecast, most regions of Pakistan will remain hot and dry during the day, but by afternoon, southeastern and central Sindh, northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir are likely to experience partly cloudy conditions with chances of rainfall accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms.

On Sunday, heavy showers with thunderstorms are expected in Sindh and southern Punjab, with some areas of Sindh facing the possibility of torrential downpours. Similar weather patterns with rain and thunderstorms are also expected in northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.

NDMA has warned that “low-lying areas of Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tharparkar, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, and Hyderabad may face flooding due to heavy rainfall.” In Punjab, from September 7 to 9, districts including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Sialkot, and Narowal are at risk of flooding in streams and nullahs.

The authority further cautioned that “flood-hit areas of Punjab may face further worsening conditions.”

Meanwhile, DG PDMA Punjab Irfan Ali Kathia briefed the media, stating that relief operations are ongoing in flood-affected areas and that the flow of rivers is being closely monitored. In Gujrat, breaches in main drains due to rainfall have led to urban flooding, though water drainage efforts are underway, and the situation is expected to improve within the next 12 to 18 hours.

Kathia added that as rainfall in northern India has subsided, water inflows in rivers have decreased. However, he warned that “light to heavy rainfall may continue until September 9.”
