NDMA Issues possible urban flooding in Islamabad

06 September, 2025 23:02

Islamabad – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent alert warning of possible urban flooding in Islamabad and northern Punjab within the next six hours as heavy monsoon rains continue.

According to NDMA, the most vulnerable areas include Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, and Jhelum, where heavy showers could trigger flash floods. The authority also warned of landslides in hilly areas and severe damage to weak infrastructure in low-lying regions.

Reports confirm that two people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours. Emergency teams have been ordered to stay on alert with water pumps, machinery, and evacuation resources ready. Hospitals in the affected districts have also been put on high alert.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said a strong weather system is active over Punjab and the capital, increasing the risk of flooding and road closures in hilly regions like Murree and Galiyat.

NDMA advised citizens in flood-prone areas to take extreme precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and report emergencies to disaster management units immediately. Authorities have already started clearing storm drains and placing relief supplies in advance.

The heavy rains come after weeks of destructive monsoon weather across the country that has damaged homes, displaced families, and disrupted transport networks. NDMA urged the public to remain attentive to weather advisories and support rescue teams, adding: “Preparedness is key to saving lives and property.”
