Punjab Faces Severe Floods: Situation Worsens in Multan, Army Deployed

A high-level flood alert has been issued in Punjab, and the situation in Multan has begun to worsen. In Jalala Pur Pirwala, due to flooding, the Pakistan Army has been called in for assistance.

India again contacted Pakistan diplomatically to inform about high-level floods at Harike and Ferozepur on the Sutlej River. In response, the Ministry of Water Resources issued warning letters to 28 agencies.

PDMA Punjab has issued a high-level flood alert for Lower Harike and Lower Ferozepur, instructing local authorities to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property.

Meanwhile, dozens of villages inside the Sher Shah Flood Bund in Multan are seeing houses collapse due to standing water, and rainfall has further worsened the plight of flood victims.

CPO Multan, Sadiq Ali, said that the situation in Jalala Pur Pirwala has deteriorated, leading to the deployment of the Pakistan Army. In the rescue operation, 14 army boats are involved, 8 boats from Rescue 1122, and 5 private boats by the police—27 boats in total are engaged in rescuing affected people.

Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, stated that severe flooding in rivers has affected over 4,100 villages and around 4.225 million people in the province, of whom 2.014 million have been moved to safe locations.

According to official reports, 423 relief camps, 512 medical camps, and 432 veterinary camps have been established in flood-affected districts. During rescue and relief operations, 1.511 million animals have also been moved to safe areas.

PDMA DG reported that 4,150 villages and 4.15 million people have been affected, and 56 people have lost their lives.

PDMA also stated that Pakistan’s Mangla Dam is 87% full, Tarbela Dam is 100% full, while India’s Bhakra Dam is 90%, Pong Dam 99%, and Thein Dam 97% full.

Meanwhile, in Chishtian, Punjab, police registered cases against 17 people for trying to break a temporary flood protection embankment in the village of K Kamran.

In Bahawalnagar, temporary embankments built by locals at various points along 160 km of the Sutlej River belt broke, submerging thousands of acres. Dozens of villages in Minchanabad, Bahawalnagar, and Chishtian were affected and cut off from towns.

The flood of the Chenab River passing through Multan has caused devastation in Shujaabad and Jalala Pur tehsils and continues downstream. The highest damage in Multan district occurred in Jalala Pur Pirwala tehsil, where over 50 villages were affected.

According to the Irrigation Department, an 8 km long temporary embankment is being constructed rapidly to protect the city.

The flow of water at Multan’s Akbar Flood Bund and Sher Shah Flood Bund has temporarily decreased, with water levels at 394 feet for the past 48 hours. Soil continues to be added to reinforce Sher Shah Flood Bund.

Meanwhile, high-level flooding is also occurring at Head Panjnad, with a flow nearing 370,000 cusecs, and moderate flooding at Chiniot.

In Alipur, dozens of villages were submerged due to the breach of the Super Bund, forcing people to evacuate on their own.

In Bahawalnagar, flooding submerged 143 villages, forcing over 100,000 people to relocate. Floods destroyed homes, crops, and essential infrastructure in the area.

At Ganda Singh on the Sutlej River, water levels have decreased, but high-level flooding continues, posing a risk to more areas.

Meanwhile, a flood surge from Ravi River’s Mai Saphoran Bund submerged 40 villages in Kabirwala, leaving over 80,000 people homeless and causing severe damage to crops, homes, and government buildings.

According to the Sindh Information Department, after wreaking havoc in Punjab, the swollen floodwaters have entered Sindh. Extremely high-level flooding is occurring at Head Panjnad, with an inflow of 97,706 cusecs. The current inflow and outflow are 446,820 cusecs.

At Trimmu Barrage, inflow and outflow are 508,371 cusecs; at Guddu Barrage, inflow is 366,151 cusecs. At Sukkur Barrage, inflow is 329,990 cusecs; at Kotri Barrage, inflow is 245,000 cusecs and outflow 226,497 cusecs.

Residents in riverine areas of Sehwan are being relocated to safe locations, and irrigation authorities are working on weak spots of protective embankments.

River Situation in Punjab

According to the Flood Forecasting Division:

  • Chenab River: very high-level flooding at Trimmu and Panjnad, with flows of 543,000 cusecs at Trimmu and 489,000 cusecs at Panjnad.

  • Ravi River: very high-level flooding at Bhaloki (152,000 cusecs) and high-level flooding at Shahdara and Sudhnai.

  • Sutlej River: extreme high-level flooding at Ganda Singh Wala and high-level flooding at Head Suleman Ki with 138,305 cusecs.
