Heavy rains in Karachi wreak havoc as Lyari, Malir streams overflow
Heavy monsoon rains on Tuesday caused the Lyari and Malir streams in Karachi to overflow, leading to urban flooding in several parts of the city. According to the report, water entered residential areas, leaving many people struggling with the situation.
In Sarjani Town and Nagan Chowrangi, rainwater entered homes. The Malir Stream also overflowed near Ayub Goth Bridge and Lasi Goth, flooding nearby houses. Both the Lyari and Malir streams became dangerous after Thado Dam reached its full capacity.
Floodwater spread to surrounding areas, including Nishtar Basti and Essa Nagri. Water from Thado Dam also reached the M-9 Motorway, affecting the Hyderabad-bound track and causing major traffic disruptions.
Rescue teams were active in Sohrab Goth, Hasan Manan Colony, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Several people trapped in the floodwater were safely evacuated.
Due to the situation, all educational institutions in Karachi will remain closed today (Wednesday). The acting commissioner of Karachi has issued a notification.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab also visited different parts of the city to inspect drainage work and flood management efforts.
