Tyler Robinson in custody in Charlie Kirk assassination

The person accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson from Utah, according to law enforcement officials.

Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a strong voice in the Trump administration, was shot on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University, south of Salt Lake City. Utah’s Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason confirmed he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

A witness, Taylor Dufur, told NBC News he heard a gunshot and saw Kirk fall out of his chair with blood coming from his neck. Officials believe the shooter fired a single shot from the roof of a nearby building, hitting Kirk from about 175 yards away.

Police said the suspect moved through stairwells and across rooftops before fleeing into a neighborhood. Video released by authorities shows the shooter running on a roof, jumping down, and walking toward a road. Mason said the person “blended in well with the college institution.”

The FBI recovered a high-powered bolt-action rifle from a wooded area and is analyzing palm, forearm, and shoe imprints collected from the rooftop.

Turning Point USA, the group Kirk founded, said in a statement that he had faced “thousands” of threats but continued his mission of reaching young Americans. “All of us will miss Charlie. None of us will ever forget him,” the group added.

Former President Donald Trump also reacted to the tragedy on Truth Social, writing: “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
