Karachi’s Yellow Line BRT Project: Launch Date & Route Details

The travel difficulties faced by Karachi’s citizens are expected to reduce as the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project nears completion, with its inauguration scheduled for December this year.

Millions of residents encounter daily travel challenges in Karachi. Reports indicate that the city requires at least 15,000 buses, yet only a few thousand old and substandard vehicles are currently in public use. This shortage has made the transport crisis one of the biggest issues in the port city.

Launched in 2022, the Yellow Line BRT is a key component of the Karachi Master Transport Plan. The project features a 21-kilometre corridor stretching from Dawood Chowrangi to Khalid bin Waleed Road. Along the route, 36 modern stations will be established, with the system expected to accommodate approximately 300,000 passengers daily. The project’s initial cost is estimated at US$428 million. Its main objective is to offer modern, safe, and environmentally friendly travel facilities for Karachi’s residents.

In addition, the Yellow Line BRT will operate electric buses, aimed at reducing environmental pollution while providing a modern standard of public transport.

This will mark Karachi’s third major BRT system after the Green Line and Red Line, which are anticipated to not only ease travel pressure but also reduce public dependence on costly and unregulated transport services.

The World Bank and the Sindh government have both played significant roles in ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
