FBR issues notices to jewelers over non-taxpaying
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has started action against jewelers who are not paying their taxes. Officials have warned that legal steps may be taken if they fail to comply, national media reported on Tuesday.
According to details, FBR has sent notices to jewelers in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Faisalabad, and Multan, asking them to explain their tax records.
Recently, it was revealed that FBR has data of 60,000 jewelers, but only 21,000 are registered with the tax authority. Out of these, just 10,524 filed tax returns.
Sources said many jewelers are underreporting their income to avoid taxes. To counter this, FBR has prepared a list of 900 jewelers in Punjab for the first phase of action.
Experts say that many traders and businessmen, including jewelers, prefer to save taxes rather than pay them honestly, and manipulating tax returns has become common practice in the country.
