PCB Chairman criticizes Modi’s “War Analogy” after India’s Asia Cup Victory

29 September, 2025 10:13

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has sharply criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial remarks linking the Asia Cup 2025 victory to war. Naqvi described the Prime Minister’s comments as “a sign of despair” and contrary to the true essence of sportsmanship.

In a strong statement, Naqvi addressed Modi’s post-match rhetoric, saying:
“War is a measure of your pride, and history has preserved your humiliating defeat at the hands of Pakistan.”
“No cricket match can change this truth,” he added, asserting that the crux of cricket is competition, not conflict.

Naqvi further condemned Modi’s attempt to draw parallels between cricket and war, arguing that it undermines the spirit of the game and reflects frustration, not victory.

The controversy arose following India’s dramatic victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup final, when Modi posted a message on X (formerly Twitter) celebrating the win. In the post, he wrote:
“Outcome is the same – India wins! Congrats to our cricketers,”
and went on to associate the cricketing success with “#OperationSindoor,” a reference to a controversial military operation. The post quickly went viral, triggering strong reactions in both India and Pakistan.

Trophy Controversy at Presentation Ceremony

In addition to the comments made by Modi, the post-match presentation ceremony in Dubai became embroiled in controversy. In an unprecedented move, the Indian cricket team declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) of their refusal.

As a result, the trophy was removed from the stage, and the ceremony concluded without India receiving the trophy. Despite the tense situation, Naqvi remained professional and continued the ceremony, presenting the runner-up cheque to Pakistan’s captain, Salman Ali Agha.

Afterward, a fireworks display was held, and while the Indian players later gathered for photographs and celebrations, they did so without the trophy or medals.

This incident added a layer of complexity to the already charged atmosphere surrounding the Asia Cup final, leaving both cricket fans and political commentators divided over the handling of the event.
