Rory McIlroy’s Wife Erica Stoll Struck by Drink and Targeted with Abuse at Ryder Cup

29 September, 2025 13:04

During the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, New York, Rory McIlroy’s wife, Erica Stoll, was hit on the head by a drink thrown from the crowd, sparking outrage and a strong reaction from the couple. The incident occurred during Saturday’s fourball session after McIlroy secured a point for Team Europe alongside Shane Lowry. As McIlroy headed back to the 17th hole to support his teammates, Erica was struck by what appeared to be a can thrown by a spectator. Startled, she turned around and gave the crowd a sharp “death stare.”

Rory McIlroy immediately reacted with anger and moved toward the crowd but was restrained by security personnel. Amidst the commotion, a fan was heard shouting, “Somebody threw a drink at her!” McIlroy checked on Erica, brushing something off her hat and asking, “Are you OK?” as security quickly surrounded the couple.

Erica was reportedly left in tears following the torrent of abuse she endured throughout the event. Witnesses said she had “tears streaming down her face” as she and McIlroy left the course, walking arm-in-arm as Rory ensured she was alright.

McIlroy himself faced intense hostility during his fourball round, including chants of “f*** you Rory” and insults directed at his family and personal life. At one point, he refused to take a putt until the crowd quieted down. Despite this, he admitted it was “very f***ing satisfying” to “stick it back to the abusers” by walking away with 3.5 points and a Ryder Cup victory.

The Northern Irishman praised Erica’s strength and composure throughout the ordeal, saying, “It should be off-limits, but obviously it wasn’t this week. Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman. She handled everything this week with class, poise and dignity like she always has. I love her and we’re going to have a good time celebrating tonight.”

Shane Lowry, a close friend and teammate, also praised Erica’s resilience, stating, “The amount of abuse that she received was astonishing. The way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable, and kudos to her for that.”

McIlroy’s personal life was also targeted, with taunts about his previous relationships and rumors linking him to golf journalist Amanda Balionis. The couple had separated last year and even filed for divorce but later reconciled.

The incident has cast a spotlight on the abuse faced by players and their families during high-profile sporting events, prompting calls for greater respect and security measures.
