Talal Chaudhry Apologises for Police Assault on Journalists
ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Interior Affairs Talal Chaudhry has apologised for the police assault on journalists at the National Press Club (NPC) in Islamabad. The incident occurred during a protest by the Awami Action Committee when police stormed the press club, manhandled reporters, and snatched cameras and phones.
Speaking to media on Friday, Chaudhry called the incident “deeply regrettable” and expressed solidarity with the journalist community. He assured that all demands of the NPC leadership and journalist organizations would be implemented.
“The government will ensure justice and accountability. Immediate steps have been taken in consultation with the NPC leadership,” Chaudhry said.
The assault drew strong condemnation from journalist organisations, who termed it an attack on press freedom. On Friday, journalists also staged a walkout from the National Assembly proceedings in protest.
Chaudhry reiterated the government’s commitment to cooperate with journalists and prevent such incidents in the future.
