Islamabad traffic update: Key roads reopen after days of blockage - check which routes remain closed
After four days of closure, educational institutions in Rawalpindi have reopened, and most major roads between Islamabad and Rawalpindi are now open for traffic.
According to reports, this has helped reduce traffic jams across both cities. However, the Faizabad Interchange remains sealed due to ongoing security measures linked to recent demonstrations by a religious group.
Islamabad Traffic Update
Officials have confirmed that Murree Road from Rawalpindi to Faizabad is still blocked, with containers placed around the interchange. This continues to affect nearby roads, including IJP Road, Double Road, and Shamsabad link routes.
Most major routes in Rawalpindi, such as Peshawar Road, Chaklala Road, The Mall, and Airport Road, are open, but diversions have been set up to keep traffic away from Faizabad.
The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service is still suspended, though mobile and data services have been restored in most areas. Authorities have not yet announced when the metro service will resume.
Traffic Restrictions and Open Roads
According to the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), heavy vehicles are not allowed to enter Islamabad until the situation improves. The ITP has also issued a revised traffic plan to help the public move safely.
Open Roads:
Srinagar Highway (Chungi No. 26 to Chand Tara Flyover)
Margalla Road (E-11 Flyover to F-6)
Jinnah Avenue
Seventh Avenue
Ninth Avenue (from IJP Road to Shaheen Chowk)
Closed Routes:
IJP Road (I-8 to Faizabad)
Suhrawardy Road (Serena to Aabpara)
Ispahani Road (Radio Pakistan Chowk to Shamas Picket)
Current Situation
Traffic flow in Rawalpindi has improved after the removal of some barricades. The reopening of IGP Road, Double Road, and the Expressway has made intercity travel easier. However, the closure at Faizabad is still causing inconvenience to daily commuters.
Authorities advise travelers to use alternate routes such as Margalla Road and Srinagar Highway until all roads are fully open.
The overall traffic situation in the twin cities is improving, but certain high-security zones, especially around Faizabad and the Red Zone, remain under partial lockdown. Travelers are advised to check official traffic updates before heading out.
