YouTube launches AI detection tool to protect creators’ identities
YouTube has introduced a new AI detection feature to help creators identify and report videos that use their likeness without permission. The move comes after concerns over the unethical use of AI and copyright violations on the platform.
For now, only creators in the YouTube Partner Program can use the tool. After verifying their identity, they can view flagged videos in the Content Detection tab on YouTube Studio. If they find any unauthorised AI-generated content, they can request its removal.
According to The Verge, YouTube has started rolling out this feature to a limited group of eligible creators, who received email notifications earlier today. The platform plans to expand access gradually over the coming months.
YouTube has warned that, since the tool is still in development, it may also flag genuine videos that include a creator’s real face or clips from their own content.
The new system works similarly to YouTube’s Content ID, which is used to detect copyright infringements.
YouTube first revealed plans for this feature last year and began testing it in December with talent from Creative Artists Agency (CAA). The goal is to help public figures and creators manage AI-generated content that imitates their image or voice.
In addition, YouTube now requires creators to label videos that use AI-generated or altered content. The company has also introduced strict policies against AI-made music that mimics real artists’ voices.
These new steps show YouTube and Google’s strong commitment to protecting creators’ rights, keeping AI use responsible, and ensuring originality in digital content.
