Torkham Border Reopens After 20 Days to Deport Illegal Afghan Residents

01 November, 2025 12:25

Torkham: The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan has been reopened after 20 days, but only for the deportation of illegal Afghan residents, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Hundreds of Afghan refugees have arrived at the border to return to their country. However, trade and pedestrian movement remain suspended until further notice.

According to Deputy Commissioner Bilal Shahid, the border has been opened specifically to facilitate the repatriation of undocumented Afghan nationals living in Pakistan. Immigration staff are processing their documents before allowing them to cross into Afghanistan.

He added that the Torkham border will stay closed for trade and regular travel until further orders.

The crossing was originally closed on October 11 due to tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which had halted all movement and caused significant trade losses.

According to UNHCR spokesperson Qaiser Khan Afridi, as of October 8, around 615,000 undocumented Afghan citizens have already been deported via the Torkham border.
