Where Is PTI Operating Its X Account From?
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has clarified that the party’s official X (formerly Twitter) account is being managed from outside Pakistan.
He said, “Those posting on the PTI X account are not in Pakistan,” revealing that some PTI workers abroad are handling the account’s operations.
The development comes after X introduced a new feature, “About this account,” which displays key account details such as location, account creation date, verification status, and how the app is accessed, as reported by TechCrunch.
Meanwhile, PTI founder official X account appeared to be operated from West Asia, although the precise country was not disclosed. Despite this, Khan has recently reaffirmed his ownership of his social media accounts, including his X profile.
Sheikh Waqas Akram’s statement distances the party’s domestic information wing from the account, highlighting that social media management is partially handled overseas. The clarification follows ongoing scrutiny over PTI’s online presence, particularly after Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023, refused to disclose the individuals managing his accounts during a National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) inquiry. Khan reportedly told investigators, “If I tell, they will be kidnapped.”
He explained that communication with the social media team is carried out indirectly: messages are conveyed by visitors who meet him inside the prison and pass instructions to the online team.
This revelation raises questions about social media management for political parties and the increasing role of remote teams in handling official communications.
