Will SBP launch new notes next year? Check update inside
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) normally introduces a new series of banknotes every 15 to 20 years to keep the currency secure and up to date. Following this practice, the central bank started working on new currency notes in January 2024, when it invited the public to submit design ideas.
In July 2025, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed confirmed that the new designs had been finalised, but he did not share the images. Since then, people have been waiting for the official launch.
Latest Update
The SBP is now preparing to send the final designs to the federal government. After that, the government will seek approval from the cabinet.
Launching new banknotes is a lengthy process that requires coordination between several departments and stages.
Usually, it takes 2 to 3 years to introduce a new banknote series. However, in a statement released in January 2024, SBP said it aimed to complete the process within 2 years.
Based on this timeline, the new currency notes are expected to be unveiled in 2026.
Old Notes Will Still Be Accepted
The SBP has confirmed that the current banknotes will remain in circulation, even after the new series is released.
Any decision to withdraw old notes will be taken slowly and in phases, and only after the new notes are available in large enough numbers.
