Who is Dhunu Joni? Assam influencer linked to 19-minute viral video
A major online controversy has erupted in Assam and beyond after an alleged 19-minute private clip, said to feature Assamese influencer and singer Dhunu Joni – also known as Dhunu Juni, began circulating. Social media platforms were flooded with claims of an alleged “private video” linked to her.
What started as scattered chatter has quickly turned into a mix of deepfake suspicion, identity confusion, and unverified marriage rumours, making Dhunu the latest focus of India’s ongoing “viral MMS” panic.
Who Is Dhunu Joni?
Before the controversy, Dhunu was widely known as the “Social Media Queen of Assam”. In her early twenties and reportedly from Nalbari district, she built a strong following on Instagram, YouTube, and short-video apps, sharing:
Dance performances
Folk and cultural clips
Lip-sync videos
Content featuring Assamese traditional attire
Her social media accounts have now been deactivated, though the reason is unconfirmed. Around 28-29 November 2025, claims surfaced on encrypted messaging channels about an alleged MMS linked to Dhunu. Initial posts mentioned a 7-minute clip, supposedly recorded in a study-room setting. Later, some claimed a “19-minute full video” existed. None of these claims have been verified, and no authentic version has been confirmed publicly.
How the Clip Spread
The situation escalated quickly as clips allegedly linked to Dhunu spread across WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, and video-sharing platforms. The content was widely labelled as the “biggest scandal” to hit Assam recently. Amid the uproar, Dhunu reportedly deactivated all her social media accounts, and attempts to contact her family were unsuccessful, increasing speculation.
Experts analyzing the clips have raised deepfake concerns, pointing to signs like inconsistent lighting, pixel distortions, and unstable backgrounds. Some observers suggested the use of body-swap deepfake technology, where a person’s face is superimposed onto another’s body. In an unverified clip, Dhunu is heard saying, “AI has ruined my life,” calling herself a victim of manipulation.
Rumours About the Man in the Clip
Online chatter also speculated about the identity of the man in the video. Some posts claimed he was a married schoolteacher with two children, possibly Dhunu’s former professor, and that he had been suspended. However, officials have reportedly denied any suspension or investigation.
Other unverified rumours suggested the man was Dhunu’s maternal uncle and that the two had married secretly, with images claiming to show them in wedding attire. None of these claims have been confirmed by family or officials.
Public Reaction and Online Debate
The scandal has sparked polarized reactions online. Some users have shared trolling, memes, and “roast” videos with hashtags like #DhunuMMS and #AssamViralGirl, while women’s rights groups and concerned citizens have warned against circulating or consuming the clip. Experts note that November 2025 has seen a rise in deepfake-based scandals, with similar cases in Bihar and Bengal.
Local police have reportedly begun a preliminary inquiry into the origins of the video, particularly whether AI tools were used. No formal FIR has been registered, and authorities have not released official statements on the clip’s authenticity or the identities involved.
