Canada offers an open work permit that allows many people to work for any employer in the country. This permit is not tied to a single job, which makes it a popular choice for foreign workers. However, not everyone qualifies, and there are some rules applicants should know.

Who Can Apply for an Open Work Permit?

Several groups of people may be eligible, including:

• International students who graduated from a designated learning institution and qualify for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

• Students in financial trouble who can no longer afford their studies.

• Vulnerable foreign workers who have an employer-specific work permit but are facing abuse or the risk of abuse.

• Family members of people who have applied for permanent residence in Canada.

• Spouses or partners of international students, foreign workers, or applicants under programs such as the Atlantic Immigration Pilot.

• Refugees, protected persons, refugee claimants, and their family members.

• Individuals who have a temporary resident permit or are under an unenforceable removal order may also be eligible.

Restrictions on an Open Work Permit

Although an open work permit offers freedom to work anywhere, some restrictions may apply:

• Type of job: Some jobs require a medical exam or special conditions.

• Location: In certain cases, such as the provincial nominee class, the permit may limit you to working in a specific province.

• Workers also cannot work for employers who are listed as non-compliant by the government.
