Indus Waters Treaty Under Pressure: Pakistan Questions India’s Chenab Flow

19 December, 2025 21:27

The Pakistani Commissioner for Indus Waters has formally raised concerns with India regarding an unusual decrease in water flow in the Chenab River.

Pakistan has sought an explanation from India, citing that emptying dead storage is prohibited under the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the Chenab River experienced a record low flow from December 10 to 16 compared to the historical levels of the past 10 years. During this period, the lowest flow was recorded at 870 cusecs.

The ministry reported that significant improvement in the Chenab’s flow has been observed since December 17, and stability has now been achieved. Water flow at Marala is returning to normal, and the Irrigation Department is continuously monitoring the river to ensure proper management.
