Has Pakistan Stopped Accepting Net Metering Applications for Solar Users?

Major Changes Coming for Pakistani Solar Users in 2026 [Check Full Details]
Islamabad | December 26, 2025: Concerns emerged recently after reports suggested that electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) in Pakistan have stopped accepting new net metering applications for solar energy users.
The suspension of applications raised alarm among consumers, especially as the government is also planning changes to solar buyback rates.
NEPRA Takes Notice
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) issued notices to all DISCOs, including K-Electric, after it was reported that new net metering requests were being blocked.
NEPRA called this a serious violation of established energy laws. The regulatory authority demanded a detailed explanation from all DISCOs within three working days.
DISCOs Respond
Some electricity companies clarified that online applications through the PITC portal are still being accepted.
They explained that physical application submission has been temporarily suspended to ensure transparency and reduce errors.
According to DISCOs, consumers who apply online still receive registration and saving numbers instantly.
They insisted that there is no overall suspension of net metering applications.
Consumer Concerns
The reports initially raised questions about whether regulatory frameworks are effective and if consumers are being unfairly restricted from solar energy programs.
NEPRA’s actions underline its commitment to enforce energy regulations and ensure that no company limits consumer access to solar services.
