NADRA introduces new biometric verification system in 2026 - check details
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is launching a new biometric verification system in January 2026. This system will make it easier, faster, and more accurate for Pakistanis to verify their identity. Unlike the old system, which mainly used fingerprints, the new system will also use facial recognition technology.
What Is the New Biometric System?
NADRA’s previous system used fingerprint scans for verifying identities. This method was used for services like:
Opening bank accounts
Registering SIM cards
Passport applications
Vehicle ownership transfers
However, many people, especially elderly citizens or those with worn-out fingerprints, faced problems when their fingerprints couldn’t be properly scanned. To solve this, starting January 20, 2026, NADRA will offer facial recognition as an alternative method of verification.
Your face will be scanned and compared with your official records in NADRA’s database. If it matches, you will receive a biometric verification certificate.
How Will It Work?
Here’s a simple step-by-step process for getting verified:
Visit a NADRA Centre: Go to the nearest NADRA registration centre if your fingerprint scan doesn’t work.
Facial Scan: NADRA will take a new photo of your face.
Check with Records: The photo will be compared with your existing record in NADRA’s database.
Certificate Issued: Once verified, you will get a certificate containing:
Your photo
CNIC number
Name and father’s name
A QR code and unique tracking ID
The certificate will be valid for 7 days and can be used for verification at banks, telecom offices, government services, or anywhere ID verification is required.
Why Is This Important?
This update is helpful for several reasons:
Some people can’t use fingerprints because of age or medical conditions.
It makes verification faster and easier for everyone.
It helps reduce delays and eliminates the need for multiple trips to fix verification issues.
People can now access services like banking, SIM registration, and passports without hassle.
This change ensures that everyone, even those with difficult fingerprints, can verify their identity easily.
Who Will Benefit Most?
Elderly citizens with faded fingerprints
People with medical conditions that affect fingerprints
Anyone who has faced verification problems at banks, SIM shops, or government offices
With this system, identity verification will be smoother and more reliable for millions of Pakistanis.
Cost and Availability
The biometric verification certificate will be available at all NADRA centres starting January 20, 2026. There will be a small fee for this service. In the future, certificates may also be available through the Pak-ID mobile app and e-Sahulat franchises once the digital ID system is fully in place.
