Trump Threatens to Invoke Insurrection Act Amid Minneapolis Protests

WASHINGTON—US President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to invoke the Insurrection Act in response to ongoing protests in Minneapolis, a move that would allow him to deploy the military to the state.

Writing on social media, the president stated he would invoke the Act if Minneapolis’ “corrupt politicians” failed to uphold the law and stop protesters from attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. He emphasized that ICE agents were simply performing their duties and characterized the attacks against them as “unacceptable.”

The threat was issued just hours after a federal officer shot and wounded an individual in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening. This incident follows the recent killing of Rene Good by an ICE officer last week, an event that sparked the current wave of protests across the state.
