Trump Calls for Leadership Change in Iran Amid Fading Protests

18 January, 2026 09:41

US President Donald Trump has stated that it is time to seriously consider a change of leadership in Iran. His statement comes as anti-government protests in Iran appear to be gradually weakening, even as Iranian authorities continue to claim that the situation is completely under control.

Trump asserted that the current Iranian rulers are governing through fear, coercion, and violence. In recent days, the US president has issued several harsh statements regarding Iran, including repeated threats of military action. A few days ago, he urged the Iranian people to persist with their protests and increase pressure on state institutions, adding that “help is on the way.”

However, Trump later softened his stance, noting he had received reports that the killings in Iran had subsided and that death penalties were not being carried out.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader recently blamed the US President directly for the domestic unrest and subsequent deaths. Responding to these allegations, Trump argued that Tehran’s leadership is resorting to unprecedented violence to maintain its grip on power. He remarked that true leadership is recognized by respect, not by fear and death.

The US president suggested that instead of preserving power by killing thousands of people, the rulers should focus on governing more effectively, as is done in the United States. He further claimed that due to “incompetent and weak leadership,” Iran has become one of the most troubled countries in the world, where citizens are deprived of their basic rights.
