Murree Snowfall Update: 5,000 Vehicles Evacuated as Heavy Snow Brings Hill Station to a Standstill

24 January, 2026 10:48

Rawalpindi, Saturday (January 24, 2026): Life in Murree has come to a complete halt after a powerful snowstorm hit the hill station, breaking a 20-year snowfall record. In some areas, snow piled up to five feet, blocking roads and trapping thousands of tourists and residents.

The heavy snowfall turned Murree into an emergency zone. Roads became invisible, vehicles got stuck, and movement across the town became nearly impossible.

Thousands of Vehicles Trapped in Snow

According to local authorities, nearly 5,000 vehicles were stranded at different points in Murree and nearby areas. Many families were stuck inside their cars for hours in freezing temperatures.

Police, traffic officials, and rescue teams launched a large-scale evacuation operation. Heavy machinery was used to remove snow and clear blocked roads.

Salt is being spread on major roads to reduce skidding. However, officials say road opening depends on weather conditions and visibility.

Tourist Entry Banned in Murree

Due to the worsening situation, authorities imposed a complete ban on tourist travel to Murree. Officials warned that icy roads, traffic congestion, and poor visibility could be deadly.

“Travel to Murree is extremely dangerous right now,” an official said. “People should avoid visiting at all costs.”

Tourists already inside Murree are being guided out in phases as roads slowly reopen.

Power and Internet Services Disrupted

Several areas in Murree have been without electricity since last night, leaving residents in darkness and extreme cold. Internet services are also partially down, making communication difficult.

Local residents say daily life has completely stopped. Shops are closed, public transport is suspended, and people are staying indoors due to fear of accidents.

Weather Department Issues Fresh Warning

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said snowfall may continue through the night, which could make the situation even worse.

Authorities fear more snow could lead to:

  • Further road closures

  • Delays in rescue operations

  • Longer power outages

Officials once again urged people to not travel to Murree until weather conditions improve.
