Belgian Teen Laurent Simons Earns PhD in Quantum Physics at 15
Laurent Simons, a 15-year-old Belgian student, has surprised the world by completing a PhD in quantum physics. According to the Flemish television network VTM, Laurent successfully defended his research thesis at the University of Antwerp this week. Often referred to as the “Belgian Little Einstein,” he has likely become one of the youngest PhD holders in history.
Laurent’s academic journey has been extraordinary from the start; he began primary school at age four and completed it by age six. By the age of 12, he had already earned a master’s degree in quantum physics, conducting research on complex topics such as bosons and black holes. Reports indicate that Laurent possesses a photographic memory and an IQ of 145—a level found in only 0.1% of the global population.
Following the passing of his grandparents when he was 11, Laurent set goals that extend far beyond his doctoral studies. Driven by a desire to serve humanity rather than for personal gain, he intends to research human longevity and immortality. He plans to study medical science in the future with the ultimate goal of prolonging and improving human life.
While Laurent’s achievement is astonishing, the title of the world’s youngest PhD holder remains with the German prodigy Carl Witte, who, according to Guinness World Records, received his doctorate at the age of 13.
