SHC replies to govt's letter on Gul Plaza fire inquiry
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has responded to a letter from the Sindh government about a judicial inquiry into the Gul Plaza fire tragedy, according to a report on Friday.
The letter was sent by CM Murad Ali Shah on Thursday night, requesting a judicial probe into the incident. In its response, the SHC said the letter must be formally submitted to the provincial governor. The court also noted that the letter does not fully comply with the Supreme Court’s 2023 judgment on forming an inquiry commission.
At a press conference, Sindh government spokesperson Memon said the inquiry will be conducted by a serving judge to ensure transparency and credibility. He emphasized that the decision to seek a judicial probe was independent and not influenced by any political party.
Memon added, “We are making the inquiry as transparent as possible so that no one can raise fingers later.” He stressed that the government will not yield to political pressure in this matter.
He also highlighted that the fire was a human tragedy, with around 80 lives lost, and not a political issue. The judicial commission will investigate the causes, assign responsibility, and take action against those found negligent.
