Savannah Guthrie’s Mother Nancy Missing: Pacemaker Stopped Syncing Hours Before Suspected Abduction
Savannah Guthrie was preparing to co-host the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, when her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing. Over 72 hours have now passed since the 84-year-old disappeared from her home in Pima County, Arizona, with investigators suspecting a possible abduction. The family has expressed deep concern about Nancy’s health, as she requires regular medication for age-related ailments, and her condition could become life-threatening if she is not found soon. Police reports reveal that Nancy’s pacemaker stopped syncing with her Apple Watch in the hours leading up to her disappearance.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Catalina Foothills residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue around 9:30 PM local time on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Her family realized she was missing the following day after she failed to attend church and could not be located at home.
Dispatch recordings obtained by PEOPLE indicate that Nancy suffers from cardiac issues and high blood pressure. Her pacemaker, which normally syncs with her Apple Watch, lost connection around 2:00 AM on January 31. When searchers arrived, her phone and watch were found inside the house, with the watch still charging. This disruption has heightened concerns given her dependence on timely monitoring and medication.
Investigators believe Nancy’s disappearance was not voluntary. Authorities reportedly discovered blood and evidence of forced entry at her home, prompting suspicions of abduction. DNA testing is ongoing to determine if the blood belongs to Nancy. Homicide detectives are now involved, and the investigation includes drones, helicopters, infrared technology, the U.S. Border Patrol, and the FBI.
Amid the crisis, Savannah Guthrie has stepped away from Today and will not host the 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony on February 6, 2026. An NBC spokesperson said:
“Savannah will not be joining us at the Olympics as she focuses on being with her family during this difficult time. Our hearts are with her and the entire Guthrie family as the search continues for their mother. We will share additional information about our Opening Ceremony coverage plans soon.”
